The surroundings

Paglia is located in a magical position, in the real centre of Trastevere. You wake up to the ringing of the bells of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere and you go to bed with the sound of clinking glasses. The Basilica is one of the medieval jewel of Rome; the best moment to visit it is at sunset, to fully enjoy the tricks of light of the mosaic in the facade. In the centre of the same name square, the fountain considered the most ancient and still functioning in Rome. The fountain was restored several times, also by Bramante. The Acqua Paola flows from it, which in ancient times used to quench the Romans’ thirst after centuries without any water supply network. The square is one of nightlife’s references and meeting point for people of all ages and nationalities. Continuing in via della Paglia, a beautiful glimpse is there, Piazza Sant’Egidio, which also hosts the Roman Museum of Trastevere, a space reserved to the organisation of especially photography temporary exhibitions, shows, conventions and concerts.

Going through the core of Trastevere, you will get to Piazza Trilussa with the beautiful fountain commissioned by Paul V Borghese which is in front of the bridge that leads to the other side of the Tiber. Through Ponte Sisto it is possible to reach all the monuments and attractions of the city like Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza Farnese, Piazza del Campidoglio, the Colosseum, Arch of Constantine and the Imperial Fora. On this side of the Tiber you can’t miss, every day except on Sunday, the historical Campo de’ Fiori’s market, the most picturesque market of Rome. The square is full with colourful stands which sell fruit and vegetable, meat, poultry and fish.

Where to eat

Walking and walking gets you hungry and it is lunch time. The best break is at “Dar Poeta” where you can eat the real Roman pizza cooked in wood oven, bruschetta and dessert. While you are strolling around small shops, stores and piazzas, have yourself a quality break eating local products. Apropos we suggest you to try “Tastevere Km0″, a deli where you can relax eating a platter of cold cuts and cheese and a glass of wine. All products sold in the shop come from Lazio’s farmers and here you can have an excellent aperitivo eating cheese platters, courgette flowers, boar meat cuts and marinated eggplants. The perfect place to have a delightful and beautiful evening is “La Trattoria De Gli Amici” in Piazza Sant’Egidio. Here you can find the real Roman food, perfectly served by the guys of the Community of Sant’Egidio.
