The surroundings

Vespucci is located in the charming district of Testaccio that might be called a country within a city and it is very close to Trastevere. After the closing of the Mattatoio, this historic neighbourhood has changed giving space to new artistic experiences, such as the Macro, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. Rione Testaccio is located in the south of Aventino and on the left Tiber’s bank and is distinguished from other areas of Rome for its original popular spirit. This quarter has maintained a simple lifestyle while still remaining tied to tradition. One of the symbols of the refurbishment is the Market, transferred in 2012 to new headquarters in Via Galvani and today is a meeting place for all shops and street-food lovers. Do not miss monuments such as the Testaccio Fountain, S. Maria Liberatrice and Porticus Aemelia. The Market of Porta Portese, Roman market par excellence, takes place every Sunday morning from 6 am to 2 pm. This lively place, populated by local people, offers every kind of items from books, antiques, clothes to food. The market goes from Mura Portuensi to Largo Troja and Piazza Ippolito Nievo; here, you can breathe the typical atmosphere of the authentic Rome.

Where to eat

Testaccio also offers a lively gastronomic nightlife. If you walk through streets, seeking a typical Roman recipe, Felice a Testaccio is an ideal choice: a “Cacio & Pepe” (a creamy cheese and pepper) as it once, will seduce you immediately. In 30, Via di Monte Testaccio, there is a typical Roman restaurant, Checcino since 1887 where you will find classical dishes mixed with lost ones. The result is a guaranteed gastronomic experience. The Scopettaro is an ancient Roman trattoria, famous for its carbonara dish. It is located on the Lungotevere Testaccio. The Guerrini bakery is a stop not to be missed if you want to sample the delights of an ancient Roman oven run by several generations of the same family. You will find bread, pizza and desserts. Finally, if you want to taste great labels, the wine Giansanti might interest you: a full immersion in the world of wine through tasting courses and live music to warm the atmosphere.
